OtterTune was an automated database tuning service that came out of Carnegie Mellon University.

As an AI database optimization tool, it watched and adjusted knobs, resources, indexes, tables, queries, autovacuum and more.

Its stated results were performance gains of up to 4x and cost reductions of 50%, though those are the company's own figures and results would have varied by workload.

If you are looking at database tuning today, OtterTune's approach is still a useful reference point: machine learning applied to configuration and schema choices on managed cloud databases.

But you will need a different product or a manual process to get that work done now.
