Overview
You write code in your editor, and GitHub Copilot suggests the next lines as you go. It is an AI code assistant and pair programmer that plugs into popular IDEs and cuts the time spent on boilerplate and other mundane code.
Teams also use it to get up to speed on an unfamiliar codebase faster.
The Enterprise tier adds more: a chat interface for asking questions about your codebase, documentation search and summaries, pull request summaries, code review skills and fine-tuned models.
Full functionality needs a paid subscription.
GitHub Copilot also offers IP indemnity, but only when filtering is enabled.
Suggestions are not always accurate or relevant, and they can be insecure if nobody reads them carefully.
Because the training draws on public code, copyright questions come up, and languages with less public representation may get weaker results.
Use GitHub Copilot as a fast first draft, and keep your testing and code review habits in place.
